Tilt Table Test

Not all diagnostic tests involve drawing blood or sending samples off to the lab. At the United Heart Institute, we provide a range of screening and diagnostic exams, each designed to bring a patient’s situation into focus. The tilt table test is one such service we provide for patients from across the Inland Empire.

What Is a Tilt Table Test?

The title table test is designed to look for causes of syncope, or fainting. It does so by checking how lying at different angles on a table can affect your cardiovascular function. We monitor your heart rate, heart rhythm, and blood pressure, noting changes at each angle. It offers a safe way to check how your body responds to simulated standing, screening for conditions such as:

  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome
  • Irregular heartbeats (dysrhythmia)

What Is a Tilt Table Test Like?

Patients can expect about between 30 to 90 minutes for the test, depending on your symptoms and individual screening goals. In some cases, you only need to complete the first part of the test and your doctor will have enough information. A tilt table test involves:
An older lady in a blue t-shirt checks her smartwatch while wearing earbuds, set against a city street at dawn.
  • Lying down on a table parallel to the floor. You will be strapped in to avoid risk of falling in cases of syncope.
  • Resting for 15 minutes, followed by recording of blood pressure and ECG.
  • We then tilt the table upward in increments of degrees: 30 degrees for 2–3 minutes, 45 degrees for 2–3 minutes, and 70 degrees for 45 minutes.
You may have an IV placed in the back of the hand. This allows your clinician to take blood samples or deliver medication if needed. You will also have blood pressure cuffs on your arm and finger to provide monitoring. Lastly, you will have electrodes on your chest to measure your heart’s electrical activity.

How Safe Is the Test?

A tilt table test is very safe. You are comfortably strapped in with soft fabric straps to avoid any risk of physical injury from falling. You may experience periods of low blood pressure due to the nature of the test. But this will be carefully monitored. Some weakness or dizziness are also possible but should fade within a few hours or even as soon as the table returns to a flat position.
