MitraClip/TEER Therapy

Whenever possible, we take the least invasive approach to treating mitral regurgitation. We are proud to offer MitraClip TEER therapy to help patients who have this condition. The United Heart Institute provides care for patients across the Inland Empire, focusing on positive patient outcomes for every procedure.

What Is a TEER Therapy?

TEER stands for transcatheter edge-to-edge repair. This minimally invasive procedure uses a special device (the MitraClip) to clip the valve leaflets in the heart together. A successful procedure will improve valve closure and reduce leakage caused by an improperly closing mitral valve. We use the MitraClip specifically for its durability and reliability. The vast majority of patients may not need another mitral valve surgery for more than 10 years with successful MitraClip placement.

Who May Need a MitraClip?

Your heart specialist may recommend a MitraClip procedure if you have mitral valve regurgitation. This condition is marked by the mitral flap allowing blood to leak back across the valve. In severe cases, this can prevent enough blood from flowing through the body, leading to symptoms and potential health complications.

This minimally invasive approach may suit patients who cannot have mitral valve repair or replacement surgery. For example, older patients with underlying health conditions may need a more conservative approach such as this.

What Are the Benefits & Risks?

The greatest benefit of the procedure is the reduction of health risks associated with mitral regurgitation. Additionally, patients should see notable improvements in related symptoms, such as:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Chest pain
  • Heart palpitations
  • And more
As a minimally invasive procedure, TEER therapy carries less risk than more invasive interventions. Working with an experienced heart surgeon further reduces risks, particularly those associated with MitraClip placement.
