What Is an ICD?

An implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) is a device that delivers measured electric shocks to the heart, restoring a regular heartbeat. Patients who have a history of heart conditions, such as heart failure, cardiac arrest, or rhythm problems, may need such a device to promote healthy heart function. The device consists of a generator and battery unit connected to leads directly situated in the heart.

What Is the ICD Implantation Procedure Like?

Placing the device will require a surgical procedure. However, it is typically done as an outpatient procedure, and patients need only local anesthetic. The procedure usually takes only about 1 hour and involves steps such as:

  • After you are numb from the anesthetic, your surgeon creates an incision in the upper left chest.
  • The leads (wires) are inserted through the incision and into the heart.
  • Your surgeon then places the generator under the skin and connects it to the leads.
  • Before closing the incisions, we will test the device, ensuring it is functioning properly.

How Often Does an ICD Need a Battery Change?

Patients need an ICD battery replacement every 5 to 7 years. Your heart specialist will see you regularly for checkups to monitor your ICD’s function and notify you when you need a battery replacement.

What Is the ICD Battery Change Like?

The old generator will be removed and a fresh battery placed. The leads will remain in place and be connected to the new generator. So, the procedure will be essentially the same as your ICD placement procedure minus the step involving placing the leads.
