Coronary Cardiac CT

Computed tomography (CT) is a noninvasive method of obtaining detailed imaging of the body’s internal structures. For our heart patients, we use a special approach called a coronary cardiac CT.

What Is a Coronary Cardiac CT?

A coronary cardiac CT involves taking a series of X-rays to create a 3D visualization of the heart’s structures (arteries, vessels, chambers, etc.). Due to it being noninvasive, we often use this earlier in the process of evaluating a patient’s heart health and screening for any conditions. Your coronary cardiac CT can be with contrast (injecting a special dye into the blood to provide enhanced imaging) or without contrast (X-rays alone), depending on your medical situation. Some of the signs a coronary cardiac CT can evaluate for include:

  • Plaque buildup in the heart
  • Narrowing or blockage of vessels
  • Damage or scar tissue from a heart attack

Who Needs a Coronary Cardiac CT?

We generally recommend a coronary cardiac CT for patients reporting symptoms concerning for heart disease. Still, we first evaluate your entire medical situation before making recommendations.

This way, we ensure you move forward in the safest, most effective manner possible. Some symptoms that may point to potential heart disease include:
  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Jaw, back, or arm pain
Please note that these are not guaranteed signs of any medical condition. However, if you experience them regularly, a medical evaluation is the ideal next step.

Are There Risks?

The main risk associated with CT involves the amount of radiation. The exam involves taking a series of X-rays, each of which causes small amounts of radiation exposure. We may avoid recommending a coronary cardia CT if you recently had another CT scan or any medical issues that might increase your risk due to radiation. Generally, a CT is considered safe and causes no issues for the majority of patients.
