Cardiac MRI

At the United Heart Institute in the Inland Empire, we provide a range of screening and imaging options to detect and diagnose heart conditions. Our facility provides in-house cardiac MRI imaging for patients who have signs and symptoms of specific heart conditions or health issues.

What Is a Cardiac MRI?

Cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) allows for noninvasive, detailed imaging of the heart’s internal structure. In contrast to X-rays or computed tomography (CT), it uses magnetic fields and radio waves instead of radiation. A single imaging visit can provide detailed images of the heart, its blood vessels, and other targeted structures. We use it to screen for and diagnose certain heart issues, including:
  • Heart muscle damage
  • Heart chamber size and function
  • Heart valve problems
  • Problems or blockages in the vessels
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Heart tumors
  • And more

Who Needs a Cardiac MRI?

We recommend a cardiac MRI for patients with risk factors or symptoms of heart disease or failure. It can also provide an updated view of the heart following a heart attack (myocardial infarction). The imaging it produces can help guide treatment plans based on the heart’s individual traits and needs. It is particularly useful for patients with complex conditions or who cannot have X-rays or CT due to contraindications (e.g., recent CT scan, increased risk of negative response to radiation).

Are There Risks?

MRI scans are generally considered very safe. We further reduce any risks by keeping the machine fully functional, evaluating each patient’s medical history, and allowing operation only by skilled specialists. The most common risks include claustrophobia or issues with metallic objects. For patients who may feel stress in enclosed spaces, we may recommend alternative treatment or provide stress-reducing medication. For metallic objects, we ensure patients remove all such objects from their person before an exam. If a patient has metallic implants, we may recommend an alternative imaging modality.
