3D Transesophageal Echocardiography

Advanced imaging techniques allow us to create extraordinarily detailed images of the heart and its structures. Using the 3D images created via 3d transesophageal echocardiography, we can evaluate a patient’s heart health and better plan appropriate management.

What Is a 3D Transesophageal Echocardiography?

A 3D transesophageal echocardiography (3D TEE) is a type of ultrasound exam. It involves using a probe inserted through the esophagus that has an ultrasound camera on its tip. It captures a series of 2d images that are then later processed to create a 3d image.

Some of the exam’s key advantages include:

  • Visualization: The images created by 3D TEE are far more detailed and accurate than traditional 2D methods.
  • Quantification: The 3D images allow specialists to better measure the heart’s structures (e.g., valves).
  • Planning: These extra details allow surgeons to better plan upcoming procedures, which can improve outcomes for such interventions.

What Is the Exam Like?

A 3D TEE involves several steps, which are all clearly explained by your doctor as you move through the exam. Generally, the exam entails:

  • Lying down on a table or bed on your left side
  • Having an IV line placed for fluids or medication if needed
  • Having an ECG monitor connected to monitor your heart activity
  • Applying a local numbing spray to the throat to reduce discomfort
  • Receiving a mild sedative to promote relaxation
  • The TEE probe being passed through your mouth and down the throat
  • Taking images, then removing the probe when finished

Who Needs a 3D Transesophageal Echocardiography?

Your heart doctor may recommend a 3D TEE if you have signs or symptoms of one or more cardiovascular conditions, such as:
  • Atherosclerosis
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Congenital heart disease
  • Heart failure
  • Heart valve disease
  • Cardiac tumors
  • And more

How Safe Is the Test?

So long as patients do not have esophageal conditions, a 3D transesophageal echocardiography is a generally safe exam. Working with a highly trained specialist will further reduce any potential risks. Contraindications that might make the procedure unsafe include:

  • Esophageal obstruction
  • History of radiation therapy to the esophagus
