Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement

At the United Heart Institute, our team of heart surgeons provide comprehensive care for a range of conditions for patients across the Inland Empire. For patients with aortic valve issues, we may recommend moving forward with a transcatheter aortic valve replacement procedure.

What Is a Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement?

A transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR) is used for patients whose aortic valve does not open fully or has become blocked. This valve is situated between the lower left heart chamber and your main artery. Thus, any narrowing of it can lead to impaired blood flow to the heart. A TAVR replaces this valve to restore healthier function to this section of the heart.

Placing it involves a minimally invasive approach, compared to open heart surgery. Using small incisions, your surgeon will place the valve and ensure it is situated to restore healthy blood flow. This can prove ideal for patients who cannot have open-heart surgery for full valve replacement.

Who Needs Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement?

Patients may need a transcatheter aortic valve replacement if they have a narrowing of the aortic valve. This condition, called aortic valve stenosis, can lead to severe complications if left untreated, including stroke and death. We can diagnose this condition through a combination of a physical exam and an echocardiogram.

What Are the Benefits & Risks?

Placing a TAVR provides a significant reduction in a patient’s risk of heart failure, stroke, and death related to impaired aortic function. Any procedure can carry some degree of risk, but these are minimized by working with the right team of specialists. We carefully review each case and diagnosis to ensure any treatment we recommend has benefits that far outweigh any potential risks. These benefits can include improvements in symptoms like:

  • Chest pain
  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Dizziness
  • And other aortic valve stenosis symptoms
