Right Heart Catheterization

The right diagnostic test can make a world of difference in receiving the right treatments at the right time. At the United Heart Institute in the Inland Empire, we work closely with each patient to find the safest, most effective evaluation method for their situation. Right heart catheterization is one of our gold standard options for certain heart conditions.

What Is Right Heart Catheterization?

Right heart catheterization (RHC) is a unique approach to evaluating and diagnosing a range of heart conditions. We conduct this diagnostic in the catheterization lab, with the patient lying down on the table in a resting pose. The results will provide information on how well the heart is functioning, including blood pressure and oxygen levels.

A full diagnostic procedure will involve several steps, including:

  • Local anesthetic injection to improve comfort
  • Insertion of a catheter into the target vein
  • Guiding the catheter to the target locations in the heart
  • Monitoring blood pressure and blood flow continuously
  • In some cases, we may inject a contrast dye to provide enhanced visualization on X-ray (if needed)
A doctor explains heart anatomy using a model while a patient listens attentively, with healthcare documents visible on the table.

Who Needs Right Heart Catheterization?

We evaluate each patient’s case individually, recommending right heart catheterization only when deemed safe and necessary. Some of the main heart concerns it can help detect and evaluate include:

  • Pulmonary hypertension
  • Heart failure
  • Valvular disease
  • Congenital heart defects
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Cardiogenic shock

Are There Risks?

While any invasive diagnostic holds some risks, we promote patient safety in two main ways. We only recommend an exam when the benefits far outweigh the risks. Also, we fully review your medical history to ensure there are no contraindications that could increase your risk. Some risks of RHC can include bleeding, allergic reactions, artery damage, and heart complications. We ensure patients are fully aware of the risks before proceeding and provide additional support to enhance individual safety.
