Coronary Angiography

Patients with symptoms concerning for coronary artery disease (CAD) may need to have a coronary angiography. We provide this imaging procedure for patients from across the Inland Empire, focusing on accurate findings and patient safety.

What Is a Coronary Angiography?

This imaging procedure involves taking multiple X-rays of the heart, specifically the ones that supply blood flow to the heart. We use the images to evaluate the health of these arteries, checking for CAD and evaluating its severity if present. Based on the findings, the imaging test can help guide treatment options and individualized patient recommendations.

What Is It Like?

While less invasive than traditional angiograms, a coronary angiogram does involve mildly invasive elements. Thus, an experienced practitioner is required to enhance patient safety and comfort. The imaging process involves several steps, with the patient lying down for each step.

  • We inject a local anesthetic into a target artery.
  • We insert a thin, flexible catheter into the artery, avoiding damage to the artery walls.
  • We guide the tube through the artery until it reaches the coronary arteries.
  • We inject a contrast dye through the tube, which enhances the visibility of the arteries on X-ray.
  • We take multiple X-rays to create detailed imaging of the arteries.

Are There Risks?

Any invasive procedure will involve some degree of risk. However, we minimize this risk through careful evaluation of each patient’s medical history and attentive care. If there are any contraindications for this imaging modality, we will recommend an alternative. For example, if a patient may be allergic to the contrast dye, we could pursue an alternate approach. Additional risks include:
  • Bleeding or infection (minimized with precise care during the exam)
  • Stroke or heart attack (both very rare)
